More Hummers

We have been having some unusually cool weather in the mornings.  Hubby has been gone and I have found myself sitting on the patio with my cup of coffee or glass of ice tea just enjoying the breeze and reading.  As I read I heard a hummingbird "chirp" that was more of an alarm...or warning.  I glanced over to see that the little guy was positioned on a branch near the hummingbird feeder.  He would not allow any other hummer to feed.  He immediately chased "intruders" and returned to his branch.

When he was still there the second day, I finally figured out that there must be a nest nearby.  I decided that if he was going to sit still I might as well take a few pictures.  When hubby returned he said that this had to be the most photographed hummer in the area.  He was right.  I spent a few hours each day taking pictures.

It was fun trying to photograph the hummingbird "battles" I got some really nice blurs! I was never able to spot the nest.  I didn't want to agitate the little guy.  He was faithfully guarding the area.

I am participating in Outdoor Wednesday hosted by Susan at A Southern Daydreamer.  Hop over and take a look!

  1. hi Kate, Wow, your photography is awesome. The little hummingbird made such a perfect subject for you to photograph, and he looks so at home perched on the tree limb branch. I love the action shot you captured. All your photos look like they came straight out of a magazine. I think the maker of the bird feeder would be interested in seeing your photos. Beautiful!
    Hope your week is great......

  6. Hummys are my favorite! I stick a feeder to my patio door to get a good view, but not good for picture taking :( The males are very territorial & will even chase the females away after they mate, silly guys! Enjoy your show & thanks for sharing. Also thanks for stopping by & commented, great to meet new bloggers :) ~Faythe @GMT~

  10. I bought a feeder this year. I filled it once and it was soon empthy although I didn't see any humminbirds. Last week I re-filled it and it is just setting there untouched. Is there a trick to attracting them?

  16. Nice shots Kate - we enjoy watching ours as well. It seems like they would expend more energy flying around and guarding the feeder than they could get from the food.

  21. You got some wonderful shots. I had one guard the feeder last summer but this summer I have only had one pair. I don't know what happened to the others. Maybe they are getting to other feeders.
