Apple Season!
The apples are ripening and it was time to take a trip to Tehachapi to the apple sheds to get some early season varieties. It is still very warm here so a trip to this mountain community sounded like a great idea!
The available varieties included Johnathan, Melrose, Empire, Golden Delicious, and Jonagold. Take a look....

And now, what am I going to make? I loved the idea of Apple Maple Butter that was shared on the Big Black Dog by Michelle. I also thought that an Apple Upside Down cake like was featured in Cook's Illustrated sounded good. Then, Grace at A Southern Grace shares not one but two apple cakes to choose from! What is a girl to do? Well, off to the kitchen to make a decision!

I love apples of all kinds. When i was a young girl i used to steal apples from the boy i had a crush on, yard! It made my heart rush! I wonder if it was the apples or the thrill of being near him :)
ReplyDeleteGreat shots

I love apples and apple picking..It got very expensive here this year at the U Pick..27 dollars for a bag usually 20 lbs fit...(although if you pack it well, you can get more in..:)
ReplyDeleteHaven't broken down and gone yet..but I know I will give in..
They have Mutzu which is like a Granny Smith..some of them are almost a lb each...
Your post made my mouth water...so many great things to make..I'll be back to see what you decided!
It seems like every county has a town with an apple festival. I love to get a baked apple with ice cream.
ReplyDeleteMy favourite is the Gala. My second is the Delicious, my third is Granny...We have McIntosh around here... nice and hard and crisp.
ReplyDeleteLoved your baskets full of apples.... It's that time.
Happy OW

I love these photos! The apples here are ripe too and when we drive by the orchards we can see the spots of bright red color among all the leaves. Then one day we'll drive by and they'll be gone. Too bad. But not TOO bad! We can find them in the market!
ReplyDeleteYour story of going to the mountains to pick the apples reminds me of a time when Dan and I were visiting some friends in the East Bay in November. We got to go with them to the mountains to cut a Christmas tree. I can't remember the name of the place we went, but they had ENORMOUS caramel apples. It was a wonderful day!
I think I may be in apple heaven ! You lucky girl - makes me want a pie.....Loved your pictures as we don't have all the varieties in Colorado !

Apples! Looking at your photos makes me happy :)
ReplyDeletethose are lovely photos. wish I could pick apples from the trees myself
ReplyDeleteI so love apple season. There's something about spending a day in the orchard picking apples that is a special delight to me. I hope you are having a wonderful day.
ReplyDeleteI love apples and all the apples you show we have here too in our little country. Great pictures. Have a nice day

I love apples. I made an apple pie last weekend because of a post displaying so many apples! I think my favorites are Granny Smiths and Delicious.

Apples and apple trees. I'm jealous! I posted an applesauce recipe last week so I'm with you!
ReplyDeleteOh goodness, AN APPLE A DAY can work wonders and don't you have a selection. I love them as a matter of fact I made a waldorf salad with gala apples yesterday.
ReplyDeleteHappy Twirls
I would like one of each please ! hugs, Cherry
ReplyDeleteGreat photos Kate. You really captured all the different types of apples out there. Can't say I've ever had a Melrose before... that's one I gotta put on the list :)
ReplyDeleteOne of my favorite outings is to our local apple orchard. They make a beautiful mile high apple pie-- and the apples are so darn good! Much better than the ones at the large chain grocery stores. I'm with you. I can't decide what apple dish to make first. I can't wait to see what you decide to make.
ReplyDeleteApples and apple trees...I sure miss them around here! These are beautiful photographs. They bring back the memory of the apple orchard up the street from our home in PA...I had never experienced apple picking and truly fresh cider. Yum!!! I vote for fresh applesauce...with chunky apples. But then again, apple pie is awfully good... Can't wait to hear what you have made.

I had my first apple from my tree today! Sweet and crisp :-) It's a Melrose.
