Apple Season!

Golden Delicious!

The apples are ripening and it was time to take a trip to Tehachapi to the apple sheds to get some early season varieties. It is still very warm here so a trip to this mountain community sounded like a great idea!

The available varieties included Johnathan, Melrose, Empire, Golden Delicious, and Jonagold. Take a look....

And now, what am I going to make? I loved the idea of Apple Maple Butter that was shared on the Big Black Dog by Michelle. I also thought that an Apple Upside Down cake like was featured in Cook's Illustrated sounded good. Then, Grace at A Southern Grace shares not one but two apple cakes to choose from! What is a girl to do? Well, off to the kitchen to make a decision!

It is Outdoor Wednesday hosted by Susan at A Southern Dreamer! Stop by and take a look at all of the wonderful outdoor experiences that folks are sharing!

  1. I love apples of all kinds. When i was a young girl i used to steal apples from the boy i had a crush on, yard! It made my heart rush! I wonder if it was the apples or the thrill of being near him :)

  5. I love these photos! The apples here are ripe too and when we drive by the orchards we can see the spots of bright red color among all the leaves. Then one day we'll drive by and they'll be gone. Too bad. But not TOO bad! We can find them in the market!

Your story of going to the mountains to pick the apples reminds me of a time when Dan and I were visiting some friends in the East Bay in November. We got to go with them to the mountains to cut a Christmas tree. I can't remember the name of the place we went, but they had ENORMOUS caramel apples. It was a wonderful day!

  16. One of my favorite outings is to our local apple orchard. They make a beautiful mile high apple pie-- and the apples are so darn good! Much better than the ones at the large chain grocery stores. I'm with you. I can't decide what apple dish to make first. I can't wait to see what you decide to make.

  17. Apples and apple trees...I sure miss them around here! These are beautiful photographs. They bring back the memory of the apple orchard up the street from our home in PA...I had never experienced apple picking and truly fresh cider. Yum!!! I vote for fresh applesauce...with chunky apples. But then again, apple pie is awfully good... Can't wait to hear what you have made.
